The GERTIE crew is looking forward to hearing as many ideas as possible for GERTIE’s future – short and long term. Sunday, April 17, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Commons is the place to be for envisioning the kind of community bus service that will best serve all of us, and ensuring that your tax dollars are well spent.

GERTIE was glad to be of assistance on March 21, the day that Search and Rescue crews from many different communities arrived on Gabriola to help search for a missing resident. GERTIE transported SAR volunteers from all over Vancouver Island, including Campbell River, Courtenay-Comox, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Metchosin and Saanich plus several locations on the mainland including Surrey, Coquitlam and Lions Bay to and from the dispatch centre at the fire hall. We were inspired by this amazing display of volunteerism and community care, as many of these searchers took time away from work and family to come to Gabriola.

Thanks also goes to our own volunteers Steve Earle, who drove the morning shift, and Trevor Gear, who took over in the afternoon. We are all sad and so sorry that the search did not have a happy ending.
