The Gabriola Arts Council and The Haven are teaming up to ensure our island is represented in the cross-Canada Culture Days celebrations Sept. 28-30.
Earlier this year, the two groups established the first ever Artist in Residence program at The Haven with an eye to how this could benefit our community. After the selection committee chose not one but two incredible artists, Edmonton writer, Shirley Serviss, and Deep Cove visual artist, Sande Waters, for a two-week residency this September, the scheming began!
By good fortune these two groups discovered that the Gabriola residency was a perfect candidate for Culture Days, a collaborative coast-to-coast-to-coast movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and culture of their communities. With the support of a National Steering Committee and Provincial Task Force, the Gabriola Arts Council and The Haven are proud to present an exciting series of talks and workshops involving the residency artists.
Edmonton-based writer Shirley Serviss teaches creative writing and works part-time as a literary Artist on the Wards at the University of Alberta Hospital. She has published three collections of poetry and her articles, poetry and personal essays have appeared in numerous magazines, anthologies and textbooks. She was a founding member of the Writers Guild of Alberta and is a member of the International Society for the Arts in Health Care. In 2010 she was honoured with an Edmonton Woman of Vision Award for her role as a mentor in the literary community.
Visual artist Sande Waters lives and works in Deep Cove, North Vancouver. She received a BFA from Emily Carr University and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her paintings, drawings and photographs have been shown and collected in Canada and the United States.
