“Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me”  Terry Fox – July 11, 1980
Decades after these sadly prescient words were uttered by one of Canada’s true heroes, The Marathon of Hope legacy flourishes worldwide, raising optimism, awareness and to date, nearly $500 million for cancer research. Although much has been accomplished in the areas of research, prevention and treatment during the last few decades, eradication of the disease will require continued perseverance and many many millions more.
On Sunday, September 16th, we invite our generous and passionate community to The Gabriola Sands Park at Twin Beaches, to walk/run/bike or simply join in the festivities. Village Foods will once again donate mmmmuffins, oranges and bottled water to all participants. In addition, I am pleased to announce that David Botten, musician, graphic and martial artist and presently starring as Brother XII, has kindly agreed to be Ambassador this year and share some of his own experiences with cancer.
Music, refreshments and on-site registration will begin promptly at 9:30am (give or take), with the route opening at 10:45am for those wishing to get an early start. The official run/walk/bike will kick off at 11am sharp, with a choice of distances along our scenic route, ranging from 1k to 10k. Pledge forms will be available at numerous locations including, Gabriola Library, Village Foods, Coastal Credit Union, Silva Bay Resort and Robert’s Place. Also folks, there will be plenty of time to join us at Twin Beaches and still enjoy our wonderful Fall Fair at the Commons.
