The Gabriola Chamber Ensemble (GCE), directed by Leah Hokanson, is once again presenting Handel’s masterwork with a twist. Last year, the “Cool Messiah” played to sold-out crowds at the United Church so this year the funky performance, a mix of traditional choruses and tango, jazz and gospel solo arrangements by the amazing Steve Smith, will be at the Haven’s Phoenix Auditorium. You won’t want to miss the show, especially when Tina Jones will once again be performing “Why do the nations so furiously rage together,” a piece which almost brought the roof down last year. You’ll also get to hear the contributions of three special guest performers, Hiromi Bradshaw on keyboard, Voodoo Dave McGrath on percussion and Brad Shipley on guitar.
So mark your calendars for Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. At the Saturday matinee you can break out your own copy of The Messiah and sing along with the GCE. Tickets are $15 and are available at Artworks, Robert’s Place and at the door. Children 10 and under are free accompanied by an adult.
Robert’s Place is offering a free dessert for ticket holders with the purchase of an entrée. This offer is valid on the concert weekend including Friday. Reservations are advised so the cooks can ‘Handel’ the rush. Please call 250-247-2010.
