CULTIVATE returning for 2021

Gabriola Arts Council

Press Release

Wednesday, August 12 2020

The Gabriola Arts Council is thrilled to announce we will be hosting the Cultivate Festival in 2021 on Gabriola Island. A place to cultivate the arts – the talents of artists, actors and musicians.

The festival will take place July 1st – 4th of next year and promises to entertain and inspire. After reaching out to the community for input, GAC made the decision to divide the festival into sections in order to appeal to more festival goers. The first two days will be dedicated to theatre, the second two days to music, with amazing art and delicious food all four days. It is important to note that unless we have reached Phase Four in the Provincial Health Plan for COVID-19 by early next year, the full-scale festival will be broken up into smaller venues for gatherings under 50 people. The show will go on!

Bobbie Blue, a retired Artistic Director, and a Director on the Board of Directors at the Gabriola Arts Council, has generously donated her time to produce Cultivate 2021. GAC is excited to have Bobbie Blue at the helm, as she brings over 50 years of experience and many long standing contacts in the music and festival industries. Bobbie was the Artistic Director of the famous Filberg Festival for 12 years, the Islands Folk Festival for 3 years, and many others. Bobbie Blue will be working with the Cultivate Committee, which is comprised of Directors Mary Ann Richards and April Vannini, as well as Executive Director, Carol Fergusson. The group has met several times since May and is already building relationships with community partners.

“I am so happy to have this opportunity to take one more kick at the can. It is a real privilege to work with the Gabriola Arts Council to produce the Cultivate Festival. I believe this festival embodies the spirit of creativity found on Gabriola, cultivating artisans, actors, and musicians.

“After enjoying so much of what Gabriola has to offer over the past forty years, it sure is a pleasure to be contributing something back, using the skills I’ve honed over so many years.”

Application forms for submissions by artists, theatre companies, musicians, and food vendors will be up on the GAC website the second half of September. In October we will meet with interested community members who would like to volunteer for the festival.

Although the festival does not take place until July 2021, there are many aspects which need planning well in advance and we are excited to involve community.

GAC is committed to enveloping the festival in its mission: to engage, enhance, and inspire the community’s cultural vitality through collaboration, leadership, and service.
