Looking for a Covid-safe night out on Gabriola, Wednesdays or Thursdays? Consider the thoughtful, not-Hollywood, off-the-beaten-path assortment of movie gems from the collection of donsflicks. The Roxy will again be the venue for this series, which began as a fundraiser for SAGA, Sanctuary Gabriola. Since SAGA’s mission is complete, the Gabriola Commons has enthusiastically agreed to accept the proceeds for its many worthy projects.

Safety will be the top priority at the Roxy, where many seats have been removed to ensure safe distancing, mask wearing is mandatory, frequently-used surfaces will be sterilized before each showing, reserved seats will be assigned according to distancing guidelines and must be reserved hours in advance.

Starting September 9, 6:45 pm, Wednesday evenings through December will feature foreign-language films; the first 6-show series has films from Vietnam (2009), India (1960), Germany-Japan (2008), Vanuatu (2016), Romania (1998) and the Soviet Union (1990).

English-language films will show Thursdays, 6:45 pm, starting September 10. First is the extraordinary UP series of documentaries, the original reality series. Begun in 1964, it traces the lives of 14 school children from around England, starting at age 7 and revisiting every 7 years until age 63 – 8 full-length films in all.

Admission is by donation. Details may be found online at donsflicks.wordpress.com.
