Family Literacy Day takes place across Canada every year on Jan. 27 to celebrate adults and children reading and learning together, and to encourage Canadians to spend at least 15 minutes enjoying a learning activity as a family every day.

This year Family Literacy Day is celebrating 15 years!

The theme for 2013 is 15 minutes of fun. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development. Even just 15 minutes a day can improve a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.

Every year branches of Vancouver Island Regional Library celebrate Family Literacy Day with a variety of fun activities for families.

Join us at the Gabriola Library on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

There will be:

• Mother Goose songs and stories at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

• Magic of Zanthera at 2 p.m.

• Face painting

• Refreshments

• Book giveaways

• Children’s literacy computers
