Gabriola Drum Day

Drum Day is back for its third annual event! Join us for a day of drumming and dancing, workshops and drum circles for all ages and any skill level at the Gabriola Commons on Sat., Aug. 24, from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Workshops range from Drum Yoga with Angelina MacNamee to an introduction to Samba, and African Drumming with Voodoo Dave. David Botten and Andreas Kahre will introduce you to hand percussion instruments form around the world, including the Cajon (Drumchair), frame drums and clay drums in ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll.’ Andreas will also take you on a tour of Vocal Percussion techniques and offer a Snare Drum workshop (‘Rudimentary, dear Watson’; just bring your snare!). Esther Moncrieff teaches West African Drum Dancing and for the younger drummers we are exploring the sounds of aquatic percussion in ‘Water Music’ (bring a towel...). This year the evening event will be a community drum circle, in the timber-frame building at the Commons, that is open to all daytime workshop participants and the community, (with a $5 donation).

Drum Day is entirely self-supporting, with part of the proceeds going to the Commons. A $25 pass, available at Village Liquor Store, gets you into any workshop as well as the evening performance.

Individual workshops are $5-10. Youth (up to 16) pay $5 any time. Volunteers get in free (call us first). Drum Day is organized by Andreas Kahre and Dave McGrath, and co-produced by the Xenographic Society and the Commons, with support by Poetry Gabriola.
