At the recent Vancouver Cup Kyokushin Karate Championships four Gabriola club members competed against students from all over Canada.

Rowyn Vincent (8 years old) entering her first tournament, performed Taikyoko San kata (pre-aranged form) with excellent spirit showing that Gabriola can hold its own against the big city clubs.

Her dad, Dave Vincent, also competing for the first time, moved through a very solid display of Yantsu kata in the adults open division. Gabriola was well represented by these two dedicated students.

Instructor EJ Hurst battled against some stiff competition in the Seniors division but after a terrific performance of Seipai kata and a tie for second, she was narrowly outperformed by last year’s champion in a repeat demonstration of the kata and placed third.

As the tournament’s oldest competitor, Gabriola’s other Kyokushin instructor, Mike Richards, performed the Tensho kata in both the senior and open adults divisions.

He was placed third in the open adults and was awarded 1st place in the seniors division. Many thanks are due to all the club members and their families who supported these four going into this tournament.

We hope for even more members competing in this prestegious event next year. It’s a lot of fun!
