On Golden Pond is a play that follows the days of a long-married couple - Ethel and Norman - who spend their summers at their cottage on Golden Pond. The playwright, Ernest Thompson, creates a believable and intimate portrait of two delightful and complex older people who are struggling with ageing, family and the inevitability of death.

Although they’ve obviously learned something about loving and caring, Norman continues to struggle in a challenging relationship with his daughter Chelsea. Her visit to Golden Pond with her fiancé and his 13-year-old son sets the stage for Norman to practice being a dad with the boy and ultimately being able to reconnect with his daughter.

Gabriola Players are presenting a staged reading of On Golden Pond in the garden at 840 Duthie Crescent on July 17, 18 and 19. This is something new for us and we’re looking forward to offering this play to a fairly small audience of no more than 30 for each performance.

If you enjoy witnessing well-defined characters cope with life’s challenges in an intimate and familiar way, you’ll appreciate the simplicity and genuine love and friendship that these people experience.

If you happen to be in the “twilight of your years” you’ll know exactly what they’re feeling and how sensitive the playwright was in creating Ethel and Norman.

To reserve your seat and join us for an afternoon or evening on Golden Pond, please call or go online to GabriolaPlayers.ca.

Gabriola Players are pleased to offer a theatre and dinner opportunity for the 5:30 p.m. staged reading of On Golden Pond on July 17.

For $35 per person, you get a seat at the performance, a ride on GERTIE to the Silva Bay Restaurant where Robert will offer a roast chicken or vegan dinner and dessert, and a ride back on GERTIE to 850 Duthie Ave (or any point between the restaurant and 850). The price includes the dinner and dessert and applicable taxes, but does not cover beverages or tips.
