The Gabriola Players will be presenting their annual One-Act Play Festival on the weekend of April 6-8. This year the Festival will consist of two contrasting but equally hilarious comedies.

The first is Virtual Reality, a dark comedy filled with life-and-death struggles, status shifts and the extraordinary power the mind can have over our perceptions. Audiences may know Alan Arkin from his award-winning acting in films such as Wait Until Dark and Little Miss Sunshine, but he has also written several books and plays. In Virtual Reality, Arkin delivers an intriguing message about what happens when power gets away from us, and in the process points to the ability of drama to create an alternative reality. Donna Deacon directs this sharply funny play featuring two of Gabriola’s favourite actors, Dave Innell and Joe DiCara.

The second play is another comedy, but of a very different sort. Living in Paradise was written by and stars Gabriola’s own Lesley Hazeldine as Maggie, with Charlie Cheffins as her husband Stew. It is a very funny look at a recently-retired couple living on Gabriola Island. It covers their arrival and initial enchantment with Gabriola’s charms, and then jumps forward ten years to reveal how they are coping with Island life. Nothing is sacred as the play touches on a variety of Island concerns. Gabriolans will recognize themselves in many, if not all, of the situations that the couple confronts. Director Jenn Feenan says, “Lesley and Charlie are fully committed to lifting the words from the page and producing an evening of lively entertainment. Be ready to laugh.... a lot!”

These comedies are aimed at grown-ups, with some coarse language and adult situations. The One-Act Plays will open on Friday night, April 6 at 7pm at the Rollo Centre. There will also be an evening performance on Saturday April 7 and matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday, April 7 and 8, at 2pm. Ticket prices have been lowered to $15 for this production, and are available at North Road Sports or on-line at
