Five books!

Five champions!

The Gabriola Arts Council has announced the inaugural Gabriola Reads competition, to take place October 3rd at the Community Hall. Hosted by CBC Radio personality Sheryl MacKay of North by Northwest, and based on the long-running CBC Canada Reads event, five champions have each picked a book on the theme: “The Quintessential Canadian Novel.” They will have an opportunity to present and debate the merits of the books and the audience will vote to decide the winner.

The five champions and their books are: Carolyn Bell—The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood; Sarah Holmes—A Complicated Kindness, by Miriam Toews; Chris Straw—Indian Horse, by Richard Wagamese; Steve Struthers—The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, by Wayne Johnston; and Megan Wurster—Sanctuary Line, by Jane Urquhart.

Amy Dawley, Head Librarian of the Gabriola branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library system, with financial support from the Friends of the Library, has arranged to purchase eleven copies of each book. These copies will be reserved for patrons of our branch from now through October. Islanders are encouraged to read as many of the books as possible.

The event will also include a live auction, with the proceeds going to the Gabriola Elementary School library.
