GAC Presents: Grim & Fischer by the Wonderheads!

Gabriola Arts Council

Wednesday, March 18 2015

The Grim Reaper’s got a schedule to keep. He’s about to fall behind. Described as “utter magic” (CBC) and “a live-action Pixar danse macabre,” Grim and Fischer is a compelling and moving theatrical performance. The Gabriola Arts Council (artsgabriola.ca) is excited to be bringing this spectacular performance to Gabriola Island.

The Grim Reaper meets his match in Mrs. Fischer, a stubborn senior whose will to live is a force to be reckoned with. Hilarious and touching, this award-winning physical comedy is the story of a tenacious grandmother who comes face-to-face with the Grim Reaper himself and must put up the fight of her life to escape his grip. Grim and Fischer is performed in full-face mask, a form so magical you will marvel in childlike delight. The show has been touring North America to sold-out houses and delighted audiences in its wake. Grim and Fischer is an extraordinary experience you won’t soon forget.

Grim and Fischer is recommended for ages ten and up, and has been lauded for its usefulness as a way of approaching conversations about aging, death and mortality with young people. The Oregon Arts Watch says, “The ultimate takeaway could prove more effective than the usual “my first gerbil” method of acclimating young ones to the idea of mortality.”

Wonderheads (wonderheads.com) is a multi award-winning physical theatre company specializing in mask performance and exquisite visual storytelling for adults and children.

Their work is performed in full-face mask, a form that mixes European mask traditions with character mask styles, resulting in a whimsical, wordless craft rarely seen on North American stages. Their productions have garnered multiple accolades. When the ‘Heads are not busy touring, they can be found in their home base of Portland, Oregon, hatching plans for new and devious ways to evoke joy and wonder.

Tickets $20; $10 for ages under 17, available in advance at North Road Sports and Village Liquor Store. Don’t forget the Behind the Mask Talkback after the show. Wednesday, March 25.
