It’s that time again – Poetry Gabriola and Haiku Canada (pacifi-kana branch) are happy to offer the 11th Annual Gabriola Haiku Gathering on July 22 – a great chance to hear some of North America’s finest poets of the haiku/tanka form.
The morning session will include Terry Ann Carter presenting “Haiku Techniques and the Doo Wop Factor,” with additional readings by Michael Dylan Welch, Carole MacRury and Susan Constable. Nanaimo poet Winona Baker will be specially honoured. Sunday, July 22, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Commons. Suggested donation $5. To register for the morning session contact naomi@naomiwakan.com.
For the adventurous, a workshop on renku (group poetry writing) will be offered in the afternoon with leaders Michael Dylan Welch, Sonja Arntzen and Vicki McCullough as guides. 1:15-4:30 p.m. This workshop will take place in the yurt at the Commons and the fee is $10. This is a rare opportunity to write poetry with leading writers in this form. To register for the afternoon session contact naomi@naomiwakan.com.
To celebrate this poetry day, the Gabriola Photography Club has teamed up with well-known North American haiku writers to present a display of matching photographs and haiku at the Commons. The photographs and haiku will be open to everyone coming to the morning session, and it will also be open to the public from midday to 4 p.m. upstairs at the Commons. There is no charge for the afternoon viewing.
