Lulu presents Semplice 2 with Dow and Hokanson
Join us Sunday, June 24, 5-6 p.m.(ish), at the Phoenix Auditorium for the second in Lulu’s new Semplice series featuring Allannah Dow, cellist and vocalist, and Leah Hokanson, pianist and vocalist, performing together for the first time.
Their program will include originals, improvisations and works by Bela Bartok, Manuel de Falla, Michael Nyman and Arvo Part.
Allannah began her cello career playing in orchestras and chamber groups. She has played in the BBC Academy Orchestra, Bristol, U.K.; Heber Opera, Brighton, U.K.; and Opera Barga, Italy, to name a few. From this classical beginning she moved to collaborating with singer-songwriters and exploring improvisation, thus sewing the seeds for her own compositions for cello and voice.
Leah Hokanson’s musical background is also rooted in the classical tradition. When she moved to Gabriola almost 10 years ago she began exploring other styles of music as well as improvisation. Currently she directs the Gabriola Chamber Ensemble, and is Artistic Director of the Lulu Performing Arts Society.
Semplice (Italian for “with simplicity”) is substance contained in small forms. Imagine going on a musical “day trip” full of brief excursions into the wild, the tender, the beguiling and amusing, and being home in time for dinner. Semplice, using few notes when only few are needed, is concerned neither with the epic nor the virtuosic, but with what is essential.
Advance tickets are $15, door $18, youth (18 and under) $5 anywhere/anytime. Tickets are available at the Village Liquor Store. And! If you dine out at Robert’s Place after the concert you’ll get a free dessert! For more information please email firstname.lastname@example.org. See you at the show!
