New play for Malcolm Lowry buffs by Gabriola playwright Charlotte Cameron

Press Release

Gabriola Island has had an enduring love affair with the famous 20th century novelist, Malcolm Lowry. His brief visit to the island in 1946 spawned his last novel, October Ferry to Gabriola—and a series of tribute events ever since. In 1994, Phyllis and Ted Reeve organized a Lowry conference at Pages Resort & Marina. In October 2016, the island hosted weeklong events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Lowry’s visit to Gabriola, including two sold-out performances of Charlotte Cameron’s play, October Ferries to Gabriola, at Surf Lodge, where Malcolm and his wife stayed in 1946. The Lowry connection continues in July with the launch of Cameron’s book, October Ferries to Gabriola, which includes the play, along with interesting background material on Cameron’s own Lowry journey.

Charlotte Cameron discovered Lowry’s novel at a Gabriola B&B when she and her husband, Tom, were looking for an island home. She identified with its fictional couple’s search for a place where they could live, love and write. After the Camerons moved to the island, Charlotte’s fascination with Lowry continued, leading to years of research about Lowry and his visit to the island. The result: October Ferries to Gabriola, a powerful drama that juxtaposes the lives of Lowry and his second wife, Margerie, with the plight of a contemporary couple.

Both couples come to Gabriola Island seeking refuge, a place of redemption and hope, creativity and rebirth. Both couples are dealing with similar troubles: alcoholism, tragedy and homelessness, hopelessness, guilt and angst. As the play moves back and forth in time, from 1946 to the present day, Cameron raises a host of existential questions and explores our endless quest for a paradise on earth.

October Ferries to Gabriola will be launched on July 15 at 2 p.m. at the Gabriola Library. The event will include a dramatic reading by two actors as well as an author signing.

After the launch, October Ferries to Gabriola will be available at Pages Resort & Marina Bookstore. It can also be ordered from FictivePress.com and most online retailers. October Ferries to Gabriola is Cameron’s second historical play published by Gabriola digital publisher, Fictive Press. Running: the Alex Decoteau Story, about Canadian aboriginal Olympic runner and World War I hero Alex Decoteau, was published in 2014.
