Michelle Benjamin, Executive Director

Gabriola Arts Council

Wednesday, January 21 2015

The Gabriola Arts Council is busy putting the final touches on their gala fundraising event, The Chair Affair. This not-to-be-missed evening of entertainment features fantastic local musicians (Daniel Petersen performing with Leah Hokanson, and—together again for your listening pleasure—Portia Boehm and Victor Anthony). Passionate slam poet Jeremy Loveday from Victoria will be on stage, as will CBC-Radio’s Bill Richardson, who has promised an original poem for the occasion. The event is hosted by Gabriola Gumshoe creator Darien Edgeler.

The highlight will be the live and silent auction of 45 chairs from the Women’s Institute. The beloved old chairs were offered to Gabriola’s artists, who jumped at the opportunity; the transformed and beautiful works of art have started to appear in the Artworks window in the Village. Besides his poetic riffs on art and community, Richardson will be auctioning off some of the chairs, while others will be available through the silent auction. The artists have done a sensational job—don’t miss the exotic mosaicked chair, the flying winged-back chair, the upholstered chair, the cashmere-sweatered chair, and many more. You can see the chairs online at The silent auction will feature an exciting collection of valuable items including works of art, and donated items from local and off-island businesses. There will be food for purchase, a cash bar, and that amazing feeling that happens when Gabriolans come together to support a cause.

In this case, the funds raised are supporting renovations at the WI Hall.

The Chair Affair will be Saturday, January 31 from 7 pm to 10 pm at the Gabriola Island Community Hall. Tickets $10 – available at North Road Sports or online at
