What are your favourite things about summer on Gabriola? Going to the beach? Great music with friends? Getting out on the water? Potluck picnics on the grass at the Commons? Or maybe exploring the island, playing in the forest, and generally being a kid again? Poetry Gabriola loves all those things too, and we’re thrilled to invite you and your friends to get active with us and take your arts programming outside!

Welcome to Poetry Summer Camp! Aug. 25-27.

Join us for the Opening Night Kick-Off Party at the HIVE on Friday, August 25, at 7 p.m. Our feature performer is a longtime friend of Poetry Gabriola, Montreal poet Ian Ferrier. Joining Ian will be PGS members and alumni, including Alex Varty, Andreas Kahre, Hilary Peach, Jill Talbot, and P.C. Vandall. Admission is by donation (suggested $10) with a Poetry Gabriola membership.

Saturday, August 26 we are taking to the high seas with Whatever Floats Your Boat: The Poetry Kayak Flotilla. At 3 p.m. we will be launching kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards at the Silva Bay Inn for a group paddle to Carlos Island, where participants will be invited to share songs and poems of islands and oceans at this open-air reading! Rent a kayak for $25, or bring your own boat for FREE! Trip is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., guided by the two Hilarys—super-kayaker Hilary Masson, and poet-herder Hilary Peach. We will return at 6 p.m., in time to catch the fabulous Quasar Saxophone Quartet at LIVE at the HIVE at 7:30. $15/$20.

And what’s a Summer Camp without a QR Scavenger Hunt? Sunday, August 27, Poetry Gabriola director Andreas Kahre will lead you through a unique art scavenger hunt with a twist. For the past year, Poetry Gabriola has been collecting poems, photos, songs, and artwork inspired by specific sites on Gabriola. If you GO to those places now, you will find, at each location, an etched aluminum QR CODE, that, when scanned with your smartphone, will reveal the work of art inspired by that place—straight to your phone! Scavenger Hunters— meet us at the Commons at 2 p.m. Sunday and pick up your secret map. Prizes awarded for the most locations found. More info at poetrygabriola.com

It’s a wrap! Join Jill Talbot and P.C. Vandall for a Poetry Potluck and Jouissance Open Mic. at the Commons at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, August 27.

Everyone is welcome to these events

If you don’t already have one, please buy a Poetry Gabriola membership for $10.
