Poetry Gabriola to hold AGM and Visioning Session

Poetry Gabriola

Press Release

Wednesday, February 10 2016

On Thursday, February 25th at the Arts & Heritage Centre (formerly WI Hall), the Poetry Gabriola Society will have its Annual General Meeting for the 2014 and 2015 years and will elect a new Board. Interested volunteers are encouraged to put their name forward for Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, or Member at Large.

Following the AGM, we are pleased to have Fay Weller facilitate a visioning session to discuss long-term plans for the Society, including possible integration with the Gabriola Arts Council. We hope all interested will attend.

Lisa Webster-Gibson will be stepping down as Chair after four years, “When I was elected as Chair of the Poetry Gabriola Society in 2012, I indicated that I would volunteer and do the job for one year… four years have gone by quickly! The Poetry Gabriola Society has in those years done some great events – from the monthly and pop-up poetry reading series to performances from Susan Musgrave and Stephen Reid, CR Avery, Naomi Beth Wakan, Evelyn Parry… and of course, the very successful ‘PerFARMance’.

“I have really enjoyed my time as Chair – I have met some amazing artists, watched many memorable performances, learned a great deal about successful event planning, and had an opportunity to delve into my own artistic practice.

“I have been supported by a great board over the years – Leni Balaban, Aleksandra Brzozowski, Charlotte Cameron, Kathleen Miniely, Janet Vickers, Ingrid Witvoet, and Susan Yates, and amazing volunteers like our Yurtkeepers Erin OK and Melissa Nobels, and poster and Facebook design guru Jill Talbot.  And, of course, a large nod of appreciation to Past President Hilary Peach who took the time to provide mentoring and guidance despite her step away from Poetry Gabriola.”

The entire Poetry Gabriola Board would like to thank all who have supported our events whether as audience, participants, donors, or volunteers. We hope to see all of you at our visioning session on the 25th as we set a path for the future!

Poetry Gabriola provides support and opportunities for local artists who work with words.

We offer grants, book launch support, readings and professional artist’s fees to local writers and performers.

We also invite artists of national and international renown to present their work in our island community, which in turn offers them the unique experience of intimate venues, a dedicated audience, and a pastoral setting.
