Notable Nomads Saskia and Darrel are back in concert at the Roxy this Wednesday evening. Although they call B.C. their home, these gifted folk/roots song-crafters live mostly on the road performing to their ever widening fan base. Saskia was born in the Netherlands and Darrel was born on the Great Plains, so prairie culture runs through their veins. They write about Canadian life and culture: stories of Louis Riel, war brides, prairie towns, voyageurs and rodeos all set to intriguing roots/rock melodies.
Saskia and Darrel were awarded Top Folk/Roots Album in Holland, Artist, Album and Songwriter in Saskatchewan, received Top 5 People’s Choice Award, and have enjoyed many years of airplay on the top indie folk/roots charts in Europe and on the CBC and indie stations across Canada.
This will be their second time at the Roxy so here’s hoping you’ll be up for an evening of fun to support them and their music.  You’ve heard it before, but once more now, in appreciation: Gabriola does provide.
Meanwhile, down at the Roxy:
Tuesday, Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m.: The Roxy’s favourite Gabriola activist, Tsiporah, presents One Through Love a new one-hour movie about the Sufi mystical experience. One Through Love features an international group of “Lovers,” as Sufi practitioners refer to themselves, who share their thoughts on the teachings of Jalaludinn Rumi and Shams of Tabriz. Peaceful, with music. $5. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m.: Saskia and Darrel in concert. Tickets $15 at Artworks. Roxy doors open at 7 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m.: She’s baaack. Sheila Norgate presents I Never Met A Blank Canvas I Didn’t Like. In this all-new show, completely rewritten for 2012, perennial Roxy favorite, artist/humourist Sheila Norgate, starts with the dreaded blank canvas and charts her course through several recent paintings. It’s a stirring and intimate road trip across the peaks and valleys of the creative process, a no holds barred look at what really goes on behind the closed studio door (like, what does she really wear when she paints?? S.B.).
Tickets $12 in advance at Artworks or $15 at the door. Roxy doors open at 7 p.m.
