As the second annual Summer Breeze Arts Tour approaches, coordinators Kate Wood and Christine Bletcher are feeling the pressure to carry forward the momentum from last year’s successful inaugural tour. They also intend to broaden the event’s scope and entrench it as a mainstay of the Gabriola art scene. Wood and Bletcher have garnered five new sponsors to endorse this self-guided tour aimed at bringing summer holidayers into the studios of resident artists and crafters. They have focused their energies on inviting new artists to participate and on promotions, joining the Chamber of Commerce to publicize the event throughout the province.

Summer Breeze is entirely artist-run. The founding artists, among them Wood, Bletcher, Bryan McCrae and Dianna Bonder, saw a natural opportunity for visitors to enjoy the art scene as well as seasonal activities.

“There was a gap to be filled in the summer,” Wood explains. She is optimistic that Summer Breeze will bring added revenue to businesses on the island. Given the success of last year’s tour, Wood says, “It’s nice to know that you can make things happen.”

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished,” Bletcher echoes. “We’ve all had to step out of our comfort zones.” Participating artists are grateful for their efforts.

“The artists are really gracious and appreciative,” Wood reports. “They understand the work that goes into it.” As exhibiting artists themselves, Wood and Bletcher are now hurrying back to the studio to produce new work for the tour, which will run July 26 and 27 from 11-4.

Summer Breeze is an opportunity to explore each artist’s creative world with them and bring home the pieces you love. Last year’s favourite artists will be joined by newcomers to the tour and to the island. Pick up a map at Artworks and enjoy your adventure.
