Thurs.-Sat., Aug. 23-25 -The Cult of Brother XII, a musical! Come watch the charismatic cult leader and his whip toting mistress in this dark and hilarious new musical at the Nanaimo Conference Centre. Please visit for ticket and showtime information.

Thurs., Aug. 23 - Streamkeepers meeting. 7 p.m. at the Agi hall. We’ll be discussing potential projects for the year, creating sub-committees and adopting streams.

Fri., Aug. 24 - Live Music at the Old Crow Café - Billy Suede. A new style of hip hop music, by blending elements of rock, electronic, psychedelic, beat poetry, spoken word, freestyle and reggae. 8-10 p.m.

Fri. & Sat., Aug. 24 & 25 - Live Music at the Old Crow Café - Tim Harrison and friends. Post-modern folk and soul. ‘Canada’s cinematic songwriter.’ 3-5 p.m.

Sat., Aug. 25 - Davy the Punk, written and performed by Bob Bossin. Stories of his father’s life in the gambling business. At the Theatre Centre, 1475 Peterson Road. 7:30 pm Tix $15 at Artworks. A fundraiser for the Gabriola Commons.

Sat., Aug. 25 - Drum Day returns to the Commons! 9 a.m. -11 p.m. Part of the proceeds go to the Commons. A $30 pass gets you into any workshop as well as the evening performance. Individual workshops are $10, and the concert is $12; youth (up to 16) pay $5 any time. Volunteers get in free (call us first). Sat., Aug. 25 - CANCELLED - The Annual Gabriola 360 paddling race around Gabriola Island has been cancelled for 2012 as there have not been enough pre-registrations.

Tues., Aug. 28 - A new look at Climate Change. A video presentation on climate and decision research. Gain a better understanding of the community perspective at this community meeting. 7 p.m. at the Gabriola Commons, upstairs. Organized by Jordan Wallace.

Thurs., Aug. 30 - Lulu and Helen Defosset present Semplice III featuring Richard Pierce Milner, Composer and Pianist, 5-6 p.m.(ish). Phoenix Auditorium. Advance tickets: $15 available at the Village Liquor Store.

Fri., Aug. 31 - Virgo Rising featured at the Coffeehouse on Gabriola. Golf Club. 6:30 p.m. band jam, 7 open stage, 9 Virgo Rising (all for $5). Come for delicious BBQ’d burgers (beef, chicken, salmon, veggie). The last time VIRGO RISING featured at the Coffeehouse was 9 years ago. Since then, a 6-year hiatus and a reunion tour last year, Vancouver Island’s own fab fem folk foursome, island faves for many years, are happy to be back on Gabe! The band members include Sue Averill, Tracy Summers, Sharon Hazelwood and Karen Gillmore. Virgo Rising’s finely crafted arrangements of traditional, original and contemporary songs are perfect settings for the group’s joyous vocal harmonies and tasty instrumental textures, all served up with down-to-earth warmth and humour.

Sat., Sept. 8 - Gabriola Bandstand Dig out your bobby socks because the Thanksgiving Studio Tour and GAC are bringing you an island style sock hop at the Surf Lodge! Dance Classes 7-8 p.m. with Gwen Spinks. Sock Hop 8-11 p.m. Live music with Rock Through the Ages, food, costume contest, fun and frivolity. Stop by the Tour Booth at Street Art or Artworks to grab your tickets before they sell out!

Seven Days a Week: The Gabriola Visitor Information Centre at Twin Beaches Mall on Taylor Bay Road is open from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m.

Mondays - Kayaking and Yoga with Silva Bay Kayak Adventures. At the Silva Bay Inn dock. 9 a.m. - noon, $30 or $15 if B.Y.O.Boat. Come out and enjoy this relaxing combination of sea kayaking with a one-hour yoga session on the smooth sandstone rocks! No experience necessary! 250-247-8939.

Wednesdays - The  PHC Kids Garden Club. 3-4 p.m. Meet at the school (if you’re in school) and walk over to the Commons, or meet at the Commons with your Mom or Dad to register and have fun while learning to garden! We look forward to seeing you!

Upcoming Festivals and Events 

October 5 to October 8 - Annual Thanksgiving Studio Tour from the Gabriola Arts Council.

October 31 - Annual Fireworks show at Twin Beaches. Hosted by the Gabriola Firefighters Association. Look for the rubber boots at local merchants to appear in October to contribute towards the show. Hot dogs, Hot Chocolate and bonfire.
