Wed., Mar. 9 - Family Movie Night. 5 pm. We’ll be watching Disney’s Inside Out on the big screen, complete with popcorn. Free, drop in at the Library.

Thurs., Mar. 10 - Everyday Experts: Fungal Freedom. 1-2 pm. Join Stephen Levesque to learn all about finding comfort with our native fungal friends in this free, drop in event at the Library.

Fri., Mar. 11 - Paws 4 Stories. 3-4 pm. Children spend one-on-one time with Therapy dog Pepper and his handler Adela in the Library. Free registration. Call library at 250-247-7878 to sign up for a 15-minute session.

Mar. 11-13 Marking the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Canada, Gabriola Players presents What Glorious Times They Had by Diane Grant. A lively and loving tribute to the determined women who made it happen. Rollo Centre, Mar. 11 & 12 at 7pm, Mar. 12 and 13 at 2pm. Tickets: $17 at North Road Sports and online at gabriolaplayers.ca.

Sat., Mar. 12 - The Mysticism of Julian of Norwich with guest presenter, Elaine Biollo, SC. 10am-3pm at the United Church. A retreat day hosted by the Gabriola Ecumenical Society. All are welcome. Sat., Mar. 12 - NFB Documentary Screening Michelle. 1 pm at the Gabriola Library. A short film that chronicles a woman’s experience just coming out of a psychiatric institution, and how she finds refuge creating with words. Free, drop in. Presented by Compassionate Connections.

Sat. Mar. 12 - Village Vision Workshop - “Designing public spaces and pedestrian walkways” with guest speaker Ross Blackwell. 1-4pm, Phoenix Auditorium, The Haven. www.villagevison.ca

Sat., Mar. 12 - HOPE Centre Carnaval! 2-6pm. Entry by donation, Silent Auction featuring 4 all day tubing passes to Mount Washington! 8 Carnival Games with Prizes, a photo booth, concession, and a bouncy castle. All proceeds go towards the HOPE Centres Teen Peer Helpers end of year retreat.

Wed. Mar. 16 - Conscious Dying, Presented by Dale Presly, founder of the Salish Sea Hospice Project - Gabriola Arts Centre, 7-8:30  PM, free admission.

Wed., Mar. 16 - Spring Break Puppet Show at the Library. 11 am - 12 pm. Join our librarians for a puppet show loosely based on a well-known fairy tale. Which one? Come to the show and see if you can guess! Free, drop in. All ages welcome.

Fri., Mar. 18 - Kevin Brown with Bob Blair at the Surf Pub. 8 PM. The U.K’s Kevin Brown is the real deal - taught by Son House, discovered by Joe Boyd,and acclaimed by Mark Knofler he is an original writer within the blues genre and a passionate guitar player in both regular slide and lap style. Bob Blair is a busy and well-respected Western Canadian musician who has performed often on Gabriola.

Weekly Events

Tuesdays - Library Lego Club. 3-4:30 pm. Drop-in free play Lego time. Best suited for children 6 – 12 years. (Dec. 8 will be the last one till after Christmas)

Wednesdays - Family Storytime at the Library. 10:30-11 am. Favourite stories, songs, and rhymes! For children birth to 5 years. Drop in.

Thursdays - Compassionate Connections – ‘A safe place to talk about hard things’ – Sharing & listening. For anyone dealing with a challenge to their mental well being – free, professionally moderated – 11a.m Upstairs, Robert’s Restaurant, back door entry. on Facebook at compassionate connectionsgabriola

AA meetings. Tuesdays at the Surf Lodge at 8am. Closed meeting for alcoholics only. Fridays at Robert’s Place upstairs at noon (12pm). Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, AA meets at 7pm at the Commons (downstairs). For information contact 250-753-7513.

Friday, July 1: Canada Day on Gabriola. Festivities in Folklife Village with Village Food Market, as well as the annual Potato Cannon contest at Brickyard Beast. 

Thursday, August 4 - Gabriola Lions host the annual Concert on the Green. 2016 headline act: “Elvis.” 

Saturday, August 6: Annual Salmon BBQ at the Gabriola Island Community Hall. 4pm to 7pm. All funds raised support the Gabriola Island Community Hall Association

Sunday, August 7: Annual Brickyard Beast 10km Run. The toughest 10km road run in Canada! www.brickyardbeast.com
