Sat., Oct. 20 - The Official Opening of the Gabriola Island Library Branch. 1 p.m. Join Vancouver Island Regional Library staff and Friends of the Library volunteers celebrating the opening of the expanded library. Music, ribbon cutting, cake and refreshments.

Sat., Oct. 20 - Gabriola Bandstand. Dig out your bobby socks because the Thanksgiving Studio Tour and the Gabriola Arts Council are bringing you an island style sock hop at the Surf Lodge! Dance classes 7-8 p.m. Sock Hop 8-11 p.m. Live music with Rock Through the Ages, food, costume contest, fun and frivolity. Stop by Artworks to grab your tickets before they sell out!

Sat., Oct. 20 - Meat draw for People for a Healthy Community. 2-5 p.m. at the Skol Pub. All proceeds support the PHC Food Bank.

Sun., Oct. 21 - 2nd Annual Run Gabriola. 8 a.m. by the post office. Come join us to run, bike, skate or hike around our beautiful island.  The course is approximately 38 km or 23 miles and you are welcome to do all or part of it. Tues., Oct. 23 - Regular meeting of the Regional District of Nanaimo Board. 7 p.m. at the RDN Offices on Hammond Bay Rd. in Nanaimo. Full agenda available on www.rdn.bc.ca.

Fri., Oct. 26 - Coffeehouse on Gabriola featuring Bowker Creek. An apt name for this five-piece string band, as its members have their roots firmly established in Victoria, and most live within a “banjo’s throw” of historic Bowker Creek, that winds through the capital city. From October to March, Coffeehouse will take place in the Haven dining room from 7:30 to 10 with open stage till 9 when the feature will perform.

Sat., Oct. 27 - My Library Card Gets Me What? 2 p.m. at the Gabriola Public Library. This special program in celebration of Canadian Library Month will showcase some of our electronic resources including VIRL Library to Go, Freegal, Auto Repair Reference Centre and Ancestry Library Edition.

Sat. & Sun., Oct. 27 & 28 - The Canadian Firearms Non-Restricted Safety Programme (rifles/shotguns) will be offered Oct. 27 and 28 and the Restricted (handgun) course on Saturday, Nov. 3. These courses are required for the Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) application which allows a person to carry, buy or inherit a firearm. Wed., Oct. 31 - Annual Halloween Fireworks Show from the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department. Fireworks at 7 p.m. at Twin Beaches. Hot dogs and other treats served up by the Firefighters Association.

Thurs., Nov. 1 - NFB Film Club: Surviving Progress. 6 p.m. at the Gabriola Public Library. A thought-provoking evening with a screening of the National Film Board documentary, Surviving Progress, a film inspired by Ronald Wright’s bestselling book, A Short History of Progress.

Fri. & Sat., Nov. 2 & 3 - Leave Home: solo show of work by Nanaimo-based Mia Tremblay, award-winning and much lauded graduate of both Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute. Weekly Events

Fridays and Saturdays only, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Gabriola Visitor Information Centre at Twin Beaches Mall on Taylor Bay Road is open.

Saturdays - Teen Night at the Gathering Place from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Saturdays - Workbees at the Commons. 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. To do: many ongoing things around the Commons. Bring: gloves, shovel, hand trowel, other tools you find useful. 

AA meets at the WI Hall on South Road. Every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday at 7 p.m. Also meets every Thursday at 8 p.m. and Fridays at noon. For more information contact 250-753-7513.

Mondays - Al-Anon is a mutual support program for people who are currently, or have been, affected by someone else’s drinking. Meets at 7 p.m. at the WI Hall. For info call 250-247-2030.

December 1: Gabriola Elementary School Christmas Craft Fair: Sign up day for the Christmas Craft Fair at the Gabriola Elementary School will be on Fri., Oct. 12. Sign-up is from 9 to 10 am in the school multi-purpose room. The Christmas Craft Fair at the School will be from 10am-4pm. The cost for vendor space is $60. Saturday Dec., 15 - Agi Association Christmas Craft Fair: The Gabriola Agricultural Association is holding their annual Christmas Fair at the Community Hall. This year’s Christmas Fair is now being held Saturday, Dec 15 (one day only) from 11am-6pm at the Community Hall.
