The 2019 Squash Race is back on - as organizers Al and Lou Strano have teamed up with Laura O’Brien and the rest of the SunDaze crew to make sure the races run on Sunday, September 15.

For the past couple of weeks, Gabriolans have been discussing the implications of there being no 2019 Fall Fair - one of those implications was the annual Squash Race.

Strano spoke with O’Brien and the two have announced that the races will be held as part of the final SunDaze of 2019.

O’Brien said registration for the races will be at 12:00 p.m.; the races will start at 1:00 p.m.; and SunDaze will start at the usual time of 2:00 p.m. and run until 6:00 p.m.

Strano said that , as per usual, racers will have an opportunity to build an entry on site prior to the race (extra wheels and/or squash provided). Along with the race category, there will be prizes for Best Dressed Squash and Best/Worst Crash. Strano said volunteers are asked to come and help set up the track at the Saturday work bee at the Commons on September 14: meet there at 10:00 a.m.

O’Brien reiterated that this will be the last SunDaze event for the year.“It’s a free community event and we will be collecting donations for the Commons to show our appreciation for all the events that have been happening there this summer and to support their vision for the future.

“I’d also like to add in, that to keep up the spirit and tradition of the Fall Fair, two tables will be set up near the cob structure if people wish to bring their most impressive produce or flowers to show off.”

SunDaze is a monthly event held through the Summer at the Commons, on one Sunday a month.

It’s a free dance music event for families and all ages of the community, supported by the Commons, Gabriola Arts Council and local volunteer DJs. Donations are collected for the Commons to be put towards the upcoming project of installing a rainwater reservoir. It’s a place for parents to relax, kids to play, and for everyone to come together and bring their own flavour of fun.
