If it looks like Jenny Newton was having fun with Garry Davey in As You Like It, that’s because she was!

The Bard will be back in the garden at the Commons this summer and Gabriola Players would like to invite islanders to take part in the merriment.

Once again Garry Davey will be offering his considerable Shakespearean expertise to island actors – old and young, experienced or absolute beginners – who’d like to take part in three staged readings in July of Love’s Labour’s Lost.

That’s right: staged readings, so no need to memorize lines.

This will be the fourth play in the Bard in the Garden project, which began in 2015 with Midsummer Night’s Dream (followed by Twelfth Night and As You Like It).

None of the actors involved in Midsummer Night’s Dream had any previous experience with Shakespeare and every one of them had a fabulous time. (And all the cast members who haven’t moved off island since are still involved.)

As Adela Torchia said after her performance as Puck: “As a newbie, I was concerned lest my lack of honed skills might take away from the efforts of the more veteran actors, but everyone was so helpful and encouraging! Garry in particular inspired me with confidence and challenged me beyond what I thought I could do.

“I couldn’t be more delighted with this as my first foray into acting.”

Sound like fun? It is!

As the title suggests, Love’s Labour’s Lost, like most Shakespeare comedies, is about the foibles of love. No sooner have the young king and his three friends sworn off romance for three years to pursue their studies than the Princess of France and her three companions turn up for an unexpected visit.

Cue mayhem. See the ad below for audition times, and make this the summer to come out to play.
