The Port Theatre is proud to present Unikkaaqtuat (Our Legends) to Nanaimo as part of our nationally-acclaimed Spotlight Series! Mixing circus arts, music, theatre, shadow puppetry and Inuit culture into an intense 90-minute experience!

Unikkaaqtuat is a multidisciplinary production led by Artcirq, Les 7 doigts de la main and Taqqut Productions.

Inspired by Inuit founding myths, this unprecedented creation will celebrate Inuit culture, its traditions and vision for the future, through a hybrid, collaborative and mutually respectful creative process. In an atmosphere shaped by video projections and a world of shadows, actors, live musicians and acrobats will transport the audience to an ancient world when life had not known death, days had not seen light, and where Inuit had not met white people. Until…

Unikkaaqtuat is set to highlight the talents of Inuit artists at a national and international scale, and foster a unique environment for cross-cultural collaboration to flourish within and beyond the project. The show is designed to travel the world on main stages, as well as on a smaller scale to reach northern communities. Shaped by a culturally diversified cast of 11 circus artists, musicians, and similarly distinct designers and technicians, the show blends circus arts, music, theatre and video in a groundbreaking 90-minute performance.

The video content of Unikkaaqtuat will be created by Inuit illustrator Germaine Arnaktauyok and directed by Neil Christopher. Their vast repertoire and knowledge of work centering on Inuit myths guides the core of this project in harmony and respect of Inuit oral traditions.

The 7 Fingers (Les 7 doigts de la main) is a collective that is at once unified and multi-faceted. In 2002, 7 circus artists came together and became The 7 Fingers. Over the course of 15 years, the collective has grown. Ambassadors of diversity, the artists have consistently spread their horizons, mixing genres to better tell their stories. Fascinated by the human condition, the 7 Fingers create performances that speak about our world and our time. Their works reach audiences across nations, with over 800 shows a year.

Artcirq is an Inuit circus performance collective based in Igloolik, Nunavut, Canada. Co-founded in 1998 by circus artists from Montreal and local Inuit youth, its mandate has sought to bridge traditional Inuit culture to modern artistic practices by creating meaningful and original work through the performing arts.

Taqqut Productions is an Inuit-owned (51%) film production company located in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Taqqut is committed to bringing the stories of the North to the world, and aims to establish itself as an innovative leader of youth and children’s programming through live action, puppet, stop motion and 2D animation creations.
