The Show Must Go On!

Gabriola Players

Press Release

Tuesday, November 21 2017

For the eleventh year in a row, the Gabriola Players will be presenting their take on that great British tradition, the Christmas Pantomime. This year’s show combines familiar themes from outer-space movies like Star Trek and Star Wars with the ancient tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. The play is called May the Farce Be with You, written by Andrew Yates, and directed by Ginny Lowes. With cast, crew and support staff all drawn from Gabriola Island, this is Gabriola Players’ largest and most lavish production of the year. As director Lowes says, “We have faced some special challenges this year. As most people know, our traditional venue, the Community Hall, suffered a certain amount of storm damage in September, and repairs are still ongoing. Nevertheless, we have been assured that the facility will be up and running adequately for us to stage our panto. As the old theatre saying goes, ‘The show must go on!’”

Charlie Cheffins, President of the Arts Council, is taking on the role of sound manager for this production. He says “there are lots of songs and dances, and plenty of opportunities for audience participation. It should be fun for audiences of all ages.” Stage Manager Jenny Newton adds, “Miss Mara and the Dancers will be performing as the opening act, there will be door prizes, lots of fun and farce, so wear your favourite costume and come out to the show.”

May the Farce Be with You opens on Friday night, November 24, at 7:00 p.m. and will have another evening performance on Saturday, November 25, at the same time. Matinees will be presented on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, November 25 and 26, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available at North Road Sports, or online at the Gabriola Players’ new website, GabePlay.ca.

The Pantomime Cow will be back in this year’s production, but in an entirely new role.
