Gabriola resident and Nanaimo’s inaugural poet laureate, Naomi Beth Wakan, is into her second year in her official position and is in for a busy spring. She has just finished judging a national teens’ poetry competition for the League of Canadian Poets and will be on the jury for the entries to the Cascadia Poetry Festival 3 competition. Cascadia Poetry Festival 3 is an exciting three day poetry event April 30th- May 2nd in Nanaimo (sessions will be at the university and the Nanaimo Museum). Check it out at http://cascadiapoetryfestival.org/. Naomi invites you all to read at a living room session she is hosting during this event on May 2nd from 3 -5:00 pm at the Nanaimo Museum.

This is a free event where poets and budding poets share their poetry in a friendly supportive setting. Naomi, of course, will be welcoming all the poets coming from afar for this fun festival.

Before that, however, Naomi will be performing during the variety show produced by Calvin Dyck at the Port Theatre, Nanaimo Bar None, as part of Festival Nanaimo (April 14th, 7 pm) and she will be offering a writing workshop on the healing power of poetry during Gabriola’s Island of the Arts Festival on April 12th at The Commons, 2 – 3:30 pm (http://artsfest.artsgabriola.ca/events/healing-through-poetry-naomi-wakan )

Later in April, she’ll be reading from her memoirs, “Some Sort of Life” at the Nanaimo North library (April 18th, 2 pm). On April 26th, she is joining with John Peirce of Namaste Farm to present a joint performance linking agriculture and poetry. This will be at The Commons after their pot luck at 5 pm.

In May, Naomi is offering a workshop on the poetry of aging at the Nanaimo Art Gallery Art Lab (contact artlab@nanaimogallery.ca) and she will also be reading at the launch of Gabriola Museum’s new program on May 17th. Add to these events readings for various civic and private occasions and, for an Octogenarian, that will keep her on her toes.
