Walk, Wheel, Ride, or Run with Terry

Gabriola Terry Fox Run

Monday, August 26 2013

Earlier this year, I attended the celebration of life for my friend and long time Islander, John Higgins...and boy did that sparkling and generous soul ever celebrate life! Every minute of every day, his indefatigable spirit and exuberance shone like a beacon of hope. And hope and humour and love of family were his keystones. His light shines still.

When John was kind enough to accept my invitation to be Terry Fox Ambassador, a precious few years ago, I remember how generous he was in his praise for the assistance provided to him and his family by The Terry Fox Foundation during his many months of treatment. And even when that damn disease returned, John and his wife/soul mate Sharon, continued to volunteer at the event and participate in the walk.

Another term for a collection of anecdotes and personal narratives is data and my data tells me that we need to keep up community fund and awareness raising events such as The Terry Fox Run, and pass that hope and determination down through the following generations.

This year, The Gabriola Island Terry Fox Run/Walk/Ride takes place at Twin Beaches – Gabriola Sands Park on Sunday, Sept. 15. Registration begins at 9 a.m., festivities begin at 10 a.m and the beautiful waterfront route opens to all at 11 a.m. The hard working Sheila Malcolmson has kindly agreed to MC the event again this year...as you all know how shy I am. There will be music and refreshments and more heartfelt words from this year’s Ambassador, but most importantly, there will be community and hope.

I look forward to seeing you. Look for posters and pledge forms at various venues around the island.
