The 5th Annual Gabriola Charity Golf Tournament, known as the Gabriola World Cup of Golf, will be this Friday, August 17 at the Gabriola Golf Course.
Doug Cavill, speaking on behalf of the Club, said this is the fifth year in a row the tournament has happened with the focus being that all funds raised stay on Gabriola Island for local non-profit charities.
Some of the charities which have seen monies from the tournament are GaLTT, PHC, the Health Care Clinic and the Commons.
16 teams of five in total compete. Those wishing to play can enter as a team or as individuals. Those looking for a team are asked to contact André Lemieux, who will coordinate them to get on a team.
Doug said, “There are always those teams that are short a person or two.
“We do have off-island players. The BC Ferries team is coming in from Vancouver, they are a sponsor. There is a team from the Piper’s Pub from Nanaimo. But the majority of players are Gabriolans.”
Doug said this is a special tournament for the Golf Club members because it’s one they get to actually play in.
“Because the Lions’ Club receives the funding, they provide the volunteers, where normally [for other tournaments] the club has a number of members who come out.
“For this tournament, the Lions volunteers come out, do the set up and prep and are out on the course as volunteers, so it means our members can come out and play, which makes it a lot of fun.”
The format for the tournament is a modified texas scramble. Prizes and a trophy are awarded for first place. Second and third also receive prizes.
And yes, there is that $10,000 hole-in-onw prize to be won.
Anyone wishing to get involved as sponsors or volunteers can contact the Club house at 250-247-8822 and be put through to Doug and the other organizers.
