Changes Occurring at People for a Healthy Community

Over the past few weeks a number of changes have taken place at People for a Healthy Community. As most know the Food Programs Coordinator has been on leave, and Executive Director Andy Telfer recently resigned to take a full time position closer to his home. The Board of Directors has taken this occasion to review PHC’s staffing needs and has determined that the agency would be better served by a full time Executive Director.
To facilitate this change the Board has regretfully laid off Food Programs Coordinator Debi Brummel and added the coordination of food programs to the future duties of the new Executive Director.
Debi has been with PHC for five years, and has been a strong advocate for food security in addition to coordinating our food programs. We wish her well in her future endeavours.
A search for a new full time Executive Director is underway, and a number of excellent candidates have applied for the job. The Hiring Committee of PHC will be holding interviews soon and it is hoped the new Executive Director will be in place in the near future.
In the interim, the Food Depot (Tuesdays from 11 am to 1:30 pm) and Soup Socials (Monday and Tuesday from 11 am - 1 pm) will continue to be ably staffed by Shirley Peterson. The Good Food Box program has been cancelled until further notice. The women’s drop-in will run as usual, from 2 till 4 pm on Mondays. Phone messages to PHC are being picked up once a week and returned as soon as possible given our limited resources.
The Board is also gearing up for our Annual General Meeting which will be held in November. PHC members are cordially invited to join us at this meeting, and we will be sending out more details as they become available. In preparation for that meeting, we are looking for community members who may be willing to sit on our Board. If you have such an interest please contact Board Chair Chris Bowers at 247-7989.
The Board of PHC thanks Gabriolans for their ongoing support of food security and women’s safety on our island, as well as for their patience while we work through the changes we are undergoing. It is our plan that PHC will emerge from these changes ready to serve the community even better in the future.
