Gabriola is amazing in so many ways. One need only walk the trails and roads to appreciate the natural treasure this island is. The upcoming artists’ studio tour should give everyone a great overview of the talented artists on the island. The writers are everywhere with authors tuned into every interest imaginable. Then there are the musicians - Nathan Tinkham, Victor Anthony, Gary Fjellgaard, Dinah d and Tina Jones, Tony Gradanti and Brad Shipley, Lou Gradanti, Jeremy MacDonald, Rick Cranston, John and Ken Capon, Steve Smith, Dick Smith, Steve Elder, Kathy McIntyre, Terry Hedges, The Molloys, Myles Black, and so many more. And don’t even get me started on the theatre and playwrights - that’s for another day. Such a quiet little island, imagine if it were busy!

Meanwhile at the Roxy

Tuesday, 7 pm, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) - Slick colourful bauble of entertainment with two sassy leading ladies, Marilyn Monroe and June Russell, tantalizing the men of two continents. Directed by Howard Hawks, always fun, and features the unforgettable “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend” sung and swung by the incomparable Marilyn. Escape down to the fantasy world of the Roxy - just because it feels so good!

Thursday, 7 pm, Sweet Smell of Success (1956) - Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis sparkle in this intense tale of ruthless, omnipotent columnist JJ Hunsecker (Lancaster) and smarmy ambitious press agent (Curtis) who’ll do anything to curry his favour. Vivid performances, fine jazz score and New York City night life of the 1950’s. Film noir returns to the Roxy once more! Dive in and savour the dark, delicious deception.

Saturday Noon Matinee, The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2008) - Heartwarming tale of a boy and his horse (sort of) in this case a little bit of Nessy goes a long way. For the kids and their adults.

Saturday, October 11th, 7:30 pm, Gabriola Acoustic Open Stage - presented by Penny Sidor. Musicians sign up free at 7 pm. All others $5.

Monday, October 13th, 7 pm, Island of Peace Yoga presents the Spiritual Cinema Circle film Eve and the Fire Horse - Two sisters growing up in a Chinese family in Canada attempt to understand religion from a uniquely childlike perspective. Picking and choosing their favourite parts of each religion, they form their own faith. Free to all, donations accepted.
