The peer helping program is an action program

It is about looking around you and deciding what you want to see on your island for youth. This program works with teams comprised of youth with great ideas, and the process of achieving those ideas.

The peer helping program is a service program

It is about thinking of others. If you have a good idea about what would make your life better it becomes a great idea when it improves others lives as well. This program helps you shift from thinking about one to thinking about many and that process amplifies your voice in the community.

The peer helping program is an impact program

It is about taking charge and doing something instead of sitting around waiting for others to do it for you. It is about opening doors and sometimes building the door itself.

The peer helping program is a commitment

The quote on last year’s team shirt was “Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving, they make mistakes but they don’t quit,” says Conrad Hilton. If you want to see change you have to stick with it. Some change takes time and going into the program with that in mind is essential to completion and reaching the change you want to see.

To illustrate the impact of past youth based projects here are some significant projects to date that have changed the youth culture on Gabriola: The Peer Helping Program, The Jam Night, HOPE for Grade Sevens, Bullied to Death (the video), The Bottle Depot, The New Building, The Zine, The Skate Program (in progress), The Dance Studio (in progress), Maegan’s Memorial Book, The Youth Murals @ the centre, The Bistro (in progress).

Most youth who have completed this program use the experience as references for employment and in scholarship applications. Many youth have successfully obtained scholarships based on the demonstrated leadership role they have played through this program.

The teen program accepts 20 youth a year. Registration is occurring now. This program fills up fast. If interested call 250-247 8020 to sign up or for more information.
