Gabriola Island Winery
- no need to leave the island
Monday, September 29 2008
Gabriola Island Winery is a family owned winery run by Fenix and Chris Theuerkorn.
Fenix is the winemaker and has over ten years experience making wine. He has been trained at UC Davis and WSET certified. Additionally, Fenix is a professor at Vancouver Island University and is currently developing a wine certification program at the Nanaimo campus.
Chris is the general manager. Her background includes ten years of marketing experience. Chris has augmented her wine career with certification from the International Sommelier Guild.
They recently replanted their vineyard with an exciting new early ripening Cabernet Sauvignon cross developed in Switzerland by Valentin Blattner. This cross requires significantly less heat units to mature than the standard Cabernet Sauvignon and is particularly resistant to powdery and downey mildew.
With an ultimate goal to grow grapes with as little impact on the environment as possible and promote the health and welfare of the entire vineyard ecosystem, they fit right in here on Gabriola. Their resident bald eagles remind them daily of this important goal.
A scenic picnic area awaits you - this licensed picnic area overlooks the vineyard with sweeping views of the mountains and water. During the Summer season they offer deli-style foods, and wine may be purchased by the glass or bottle.
While they are closed for the Fall/Winter season, you can visit by appointment. Just give them a call at 250-244-1648.
And they’re open for the Thanksgiving Weekend, from noon to 5 pm, a nice little respite from touring Gabriola’s many studios.
