Gabriola emissions over 15,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent in 2008
Fay Weller Press Release
Monday, February 8 2010
The greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of various sectors in our community are described in a report released by Island Futures this week. The biggest culprit was the fuel we used for our cars and trucks, which contributed 39 percent of the emissions. Second in line was the ferry at 19 percent; and third was transportation of our food at 15 percent. Based on the total figures the annual average GHG emission was 3.57 tonnes CO2 equivalent per Gabriola resident.
The authors, Fay Weller, Nick Doe and Bob McKechnie, produced the report on a voluntary basis for community use. It is their hope that the information will be helpful to those interested in identifying ways of reducing GHG emissions, and as well to elected officials and government bodies as they develop supportive policy and legislative changes. They emphasize that this is a baseline report based on the best available information and will be updated as new information is identified. The report is available at www.islandfutures.ca and comments are encouraged. It can also be found at www.nickdoe.ca/pdfs/Webp638.pdf. A related audit of the island’s energy use is forthcoming.
