Tourism Counselors of all ages needed for the VIC
Carol Ramsay, Manager Chamber of Commerce

It’s a great way to share your enthusiasm for Gabriola and all it has to offer. As a tourism counselor you enhance our visitors’ experiences by helping them make informed decisions about where to go, what to see, where to shop, and where to stay. And it’s not only tourists. Locals too often can’t find those special places, the biking trails, petroglyphs and even Coats Marsh Regional Park. Additionally, you’ll be asked to provide info to locals on everything from where to buy firewood to whom to call to fix the plumbing. The VIC also racks materials from all over BC, and locals often come for information prior to their travels.
We welcome individuals of all ages! What a great work experience for a young adult, an older adult, a new resident or someone who has been here for years. July and August are our busiest months, and we are open every day from 10 am to 6 pm with about 1,500 visitors per month. Shifts are four hours long. We also have reduced hours other times of the year, from 11 – 3 pm. Whether you wish to work one shift a week, or one shift a month, we have a place for you.
The Gabriola Chamber provides Tourism Visitor Information Counselor training, free of charge and on island. This includes modules on tourism awareness, attitude, communication, operational procedures, information services and marketing. And your certification is recognized province wide. We also provide lots of hand on training to ease you through those first few shifts.
There are also loads of other things that need to be done during a day at the VIC. Experience with Word, Excel, InDesign, PhotoShop and Illustrator an asset or we can train if the aptitude is there. Please email giccmanager@shaw.ca or call Carol at her home office, 247-9235.
