Ferry terminal upgrades continue this week

Starting mid-February and continuing through the end of April, BC Ferries will be upgrading the electrical service at Descanso Bay Terminal on Gabriola Island. Improvements will be made to the terminal’s electrical supply and to the shore-to-ship power capability. The work will require trenching in the ferry access lane and down the length of the terminal between the vehicle lane and the passenger drop-off lane.
There may be some disruption to parking at the terminal due to construction material storage. The project may also require some night work due to low tide dependency.
Further updates will be provided as the work progresses. These improvements are not anticipated to impact the ferry schedule.
Deborah Marshall, director, media relations said, “The disruptions will be on the northern edge of the parking lot with only a couple of spots possibly being impacted.
“If some night work is required, it would be only electrical crews doing wiring; therefore, no noisy work.”
The washrooms at the terminal were closed last week for repairs, Deborah said, “The repair work should be finished early next week with washrooms being opened by Wednesday.
“BC Ferries has installed portable washrooms through this washroom closure.”
At the fall Ferry Advisory Committee meeting, BC Ferries staff had said there was a proposal on the budget plans for washroom improvements at the Nanaimo terminal.
Deborah confirmed that with the 2010 budget, “The budget for washroom improvements at Nanaimo Harbour has been approved and design work has commenced. Site work will take place through the spring.”
