Changes to a provincial regulation banning youth under the age of 18 from ultraviolet (UV) tanning are now in force to reduce the chances of developing skin cancer later in life. Effective Oct. 15, businesses that fail to post the required sign informing the public of the ban, or who violate the ban by unlawfully permitting minors to use their indoor tanning equipment without a  prescription, will face a fine of $345 for each offence. The BC SPCA’s Nanaimo Branch is once again open for adoptions. The shelter, which had been closed temporarily while treating cases of ringworm, is now open regular hours for adoptions. The shelter cannot yet take in new animals, but expects to be back to full operation soon.

The Recreation Society is offering a first aid course on Sunday, Nov. 4.  Please register with the Recreation Society by calling 250-247-2014 or emailing gabrec@telus.net by Oct. 25 if you are interested in attending.  The cost will be $50, which is half-price thanks to a subsidy provided to island residents by the Gabriola Ambulance Society.

Services for children and youth who have experienced abuse or neglect have resumed on Vancouver Island with an interdisciplinary team now based in a Nanaimo clinic. The Vancouver Island Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (VI SCAN) program operates out of a renovated facility at #39 - 1925 Bowen Road. Link to the VIHA news release here.
