Auxiliary presents $27,585 in grants for health programs

On November 7, 2016, the Gabriola Auxiliary for Island Health Care Society held its annual general meeting at the Gabriola Gardens. Each year at this time the Auxiliary presents successful applicants with grants for programs and services on Gabriola Island related to health care. The Auxiliary has given $46,608.86 in grants since 2012, not including this year’s recipients which are: 

 • People for a Healthy Community - Seniors Stepping Up, Stepping Out program, $6000 

 • Parents Advisory Committee - Sex education program for Grades 3 – 6, $1000 

 • Gabriola Health Care Foundation - Upgrades at clinic: reception and equipment, $9500 

 • The HOPE Centre - Early Years programming, $2000 

 • Gabriola Arts Council - Healing Power of Art program, $5640 

 • Gabriola Community Bus (GERTIE) - seniors’ bus fare subsidy, $3120 

 • Gabriola Commons Foundation - Soup Stock program, $325 

Total 2016 grants: $27,585.00

The grants presented at the AGM are the result of the Auxiliary’s call for grant applications. Throughout the year the Auxiliary also awards grants under the special circumstances or emergency provisions of their policy. These grants are limited to a maximum of $1000 per application and need only Board approval. This year the Board awarded the following under this policy: $1000 scholarship to Grade 12 student Alexa DeJong; $1000 to Compassionate Connections; $500 to Angela Pounds, Gabriola community social worker, for nutritional supplements; $500 to PHC for Mental Health Week for supplies and advertising; $348 for the D.A.R.E. program; $107 for FETCH GABRIOLA (the directory of Health and Community Services); and ice cream donations for the seniors’ luncheon, PHC student work experience project and the upcoming Christmas Spirit Dinner.

The Gabriola Auxiliary for Island Health Care Society facilitates multiple programs throughout the year: Meals on Wheels, Drivers to Doctors, Lifeline installations. All of the programs are run by volunteers. The Auxiliary operates a boutique thrift store - the GABE Shop, and a seasonal ice cream cart - the GABE Ice Cream Cart. The proceeds from these business enterprises, along with various fundraisers, fund all of the programs under the Auxiliary umbrella including the grant program. The GABE Shop accepts gently used or new items as donations, which are sold in the shop where the proceeds comprise a large percentage of the overall funds raised by the Auxiliary.

The Gabriola Auxiliary for Island Health Care Society wishes to thank the community of Gabriola and its friends for their continued support of the Auxiliary’s efforts. Every treasure you purchase at the GABE Shop, every ice cream you buy in the summer, and every event you attend makes a difference to island health care.
