Happy New Year! Tip a glass to saying bye bye to 2020!

D.F.O. is indeed instigating a “pulse prawn fishery” starting January 1st through January 15th in Area 17-10. This means we cannot fish in our traditional spot off the Flat Tops until January 16th through the 31st. It is then closed the first two weeks of February, open again for the last two. It is closed from March 1st through the 15th, then reopens permanently for the year. The area South and East of Thrasher Rock, Areas 29-3, 29-4 and 29-5 will remain open, if you want to prawn there. The currents can be quite heavy in these areas, so make sure to add extra weight to your traps.

Chinook fishing is quite good Grande through Whalebone. Bottom bouncing in 160 feet of water with the Evil Eye or Cookies and Cream spoon, or Tomic glow green or Pearl plugs is producing lots of fish. The down side is finding legal sized fish, as the high majority of fish are 18 to 22 inches long. They are incredible eating coming from the very cold water. They are high in oil content, and very flavourful!

Prawning is quite good off the Flat Tops, expect 75 to 100 per trap. Most are jumbo sized, but remember to throw back the berried spawners!

Good fishing!
