Kelp greenling are a shallow water fish, usually found over rock bottoms or around underwater kelp beds. The males are brown with red spots. The females are very beautiful, with a golden tummy and fins, and red and blue spots. These fish usually weigh between a pound and four pounds. They are easily taken using jigs fished just off the bottom. Gabriola Reef, The Flat Tops, Whalebone and Entrance Island all have good populations of kelp greenling. There is no minimum size limit for greenling, and possession limit is three per day per angler. They are very good to eat with a mild white flesh.
I have seen confusion with anglers mistaking green coloured ling for kelp greenling. Ling, with green flesh, or white flesh, must be 65 cm in length for retention. They are two very distinct species, and should not be confused with one another.
  Good fishing!
