The weather was way more cooperative this week, with some lovely fishable days!

The 15th was spectacular, with the warm sunshine and calm seas. We fished on the 16th, and although it was overcast, it was calm and very fishable. There were spectacular amounts of Chinook caught and released over these two days, but no one reported keeping any legal sized fish. I don’t remember having this quantity of Chinook in the area, and not being able to take the occasional one home for dinner. I do remember taking some Japanese tourists out for a winter fish in the late 80’s. We caught 18 Chinook, some of which were within a half inch of legal length and weighed about 6 pounds, and I gently released all of them. They didn’t speak any English, and were getting quite frustrated by the end of the trip. I then took an abbreviated Japanese course at Malaspina College, and one of the few things I remember from that course is the word skoshi. Too little!

Prawning is open at the Flat Tops for two weeks starting January 15th. We had great prawning fishing the 350 foot contour, but remember to release the berried females!

  Good fishing!
