Fishing Report for July 8, 2020

We decided to keep the fishing derby going this year, in a very limited COVID responsible manner.

This years’ derby is called the 2020 Gabriola Pandemic Pro Am, and will be held dawn until 5 P.M. on August 8. Weigh times are 11 until 12, and 4 until 5 on the outer Silva Bay Marina dock.  Hopefully next year we can run the traditional Silva Bay Fishing Derby!

We are only selling 48 tickets, so as not to create crowds at the prize table and bbq. They are $50 apiece, and all the money  collected will be awarded as cash prizes.

There will be first, second, and third largest Chinook (under 80 cm’s) and one for largest hatchery Coho. Tickets are now on sale at Silva Bay Marina. I apologize in advance for the fact that some people will not be able to participate due to the limited space.

I’m just rolling with the times, and look forward to doing this full bore next year!

The Harbour Chandler has graciously donated the $4,500 Lowrance structure finder, and you can buy tickets for the draw for $10 apiece, or 3 for $20.

The draw will be held August 8th after the derby. All monies collected will be donated to the Nanaimo River Hatchery. Please buy lots! We normally donate all the derby proceeds to them, and they do great work and are constantly underfunded! Tickets will be available at Silva Bay Marina, Pages, Island Home and Garden, and Arbutus Home Building Centre.

Chinook fishing is very random, due to lack of bait. There are small pockets of fish in all the normal areas, but you have to hunt to find them. The fishing is extraordinary twenty miles to the North of us. Hopefully these fish will move South soon! Entrance lit up about this time last year.

The Coho have temporarily disappeared, also. I tried running my 3 inch plugs over the structure at Entrance, and again, no food, no fish.

Ling and rockfish can be found on the pinnacles at Entrance and Thrasher at 35 to 100 feet deep. Plastics have been the best producer this week.

The commercial prawners are still fishing.

Good fishing!
