Fishing Report for June 19, 2018
Someone forgot to rub Buddha’s tummy, and ask him not to let the winds blow on Derby Weekend! Saturday morning hit 33 knots, and we were fishing in seven foot trenches after the tide change at Thrasher. This was in the top three worst conditions I’ve fished in thirty years of chartering. I was amazed the Vancouver boats made it over Friday night, only to have to fish sporadically on Saturday. Newcomer to Gabriola, Phil Claxton, won the Yamaha 9.9 motor donated by Parker Marine, with a 20.01 pound Chinook. Mike Smith ran second with a 18.95 pound Chinook. Largest Coho was taken by Nelson (Chicken legs) Thorne at 4.29 pound. Keith Kloosterboer took second place with a 3.76 pound Coho. Don Esau won the closet to fifteen pound ling prize with a 11.72 pound fish. Ron Hayes won the Lowrance structure finder draw prize donated by Harbour Chandler. There were 96 Chinook, 44 Coho, and 8 ling weighed into the derby. It is hard to say where fishing was best. We fished between Thrasher and the green can, to stay in a partial wind shield. We caught some nice Chinook, but the fishing was not fast. Fishing was productive at Entrance and the Flat Tops, also. Certain areas off Thrasher and Snake held a ton of Coho, which is superb news, especially since the new one a day Chinook rule came into effect June 1st. Thank you to all our participants and sponsors!
Thanks to Clyde, Regan and Sylvie, and Billy Boyte for your organizational abilities. Thanks to our weigh team of Stewart and Jo, and to Tannie and Sabrina for cooking!
Good fishing!
