Well, the rains came, the wind stayed down, and the fish proved to be mostly fickle, but the Silva Bay Salmon Derby was a roaring success anyway!

Tony Harvey won the largest Chinook salmon prize of a 9.9 Yamaha motor from Parker Marine for his 23.61 pound Chinook.

Nina Wheatley won the draw for the Lowrance structure finder donated by the Harbour Chandler.

Dale Kuopinak won largest Coho with a 7.53 pound fish.

Approximately 150 prizes were distributed for various categories, and 244 anglers participated in the derby.

Many thanks to Clyde Wicks and Regan Lall for their organizational abilities. Thanks for our weigh crew, Norm (Woodchuck) Perron, Peter (Little Woodchuck) Wuitchik, John L’hirondelle, and Chris Doherty. And to our fabulous cooks, Tannie and Sabrina Meyer, and to Village Food Market and IGA for providing the burgies! And to our ticket distributors, Silva Bay Marina, Page’s, North Road Sports, Island Home and Garden, Harbour Chandler, and Gone Fishin’!

Most of the newsworthy fish in the derby were taken off Entrance Island, fishing very deep with bait. Grande through Whalebone was littered with undersized fish, and Thrasher had very short bite times.

A few boats did remarkably well, while most had to really work for their fish. Ironically, the Grande to Whalebone area came on again, just after the derby.

Good fishing!

Thanks to all of our sponsors!

Without your generosity this event would not be possible!
