From One To Five Hundred in just 6 years!

So many good ideas start from two friends talking – and that is exactly how the Sustainable Gabriola Heat Pump program started 6 years ago, as the late Jeff Molloy and Chris Boulsbee decided to buy a heat pump for their homes.

In typical Gabriolan fashion, Boulsbee and Molloy shared their research on the best unit for Gabriola.

Bob McKechnie and Fay Weller, with help from Frank Shoemaker, put into place the organizational support and business plan and voilà the Gabriola Community Heat Pump program was born.

Over the years, the team has assisted other not-for-profits, with units for the Food Bank, the Arts Council, the HOPE Centre, and the People for a Healthy Community fundraising raffle. This week the 500th unit was installed on Gabriola!

Great for residents, and great for the environment!

This unit was part of the PHC seniors’ heat pump pilot project, where units were placed into residences where seniors were having trouble managing their wood heat, or where the cost of electricity was making existing housing unviable. The pilot evaluation will be completed later this year, and results shared with funders in the hopes that new programs will include this kind of innovation.
