Car enthusiasts of Gabriola have gathered together to form the Gabriola Cruisers.

Randy Phillips, elected president of the club, said it came about after the very successful car show held at Twin Beaches last year. Kent Moen of Wild Rose Garden Centre was the organizer of the show, and one of those responsible for organizing the Cruisers.

Phillips said there have been a couple of meetings so far, with 20 people signed up.

Dues are $25, and allow a member to enter one vehicle in the 2016 Show and Shine.

Non-members pay $15 to enter the show.

Phillips said, “There’s a lot of interest in old cars and cars in general on Gabriola. This club is open to motorcycles as well - you don’t even have to have a car to join.”

He said there is a fellowship about being in the club and getting together at meetings where ideas and techniques can be shared.

There are also some potential perks, as the club is working to establish relationships with parts stores and auto body shops for member discounts. And there are the cruises, on and off the island.

The club meets on the last Thursday of every month, rotating the location.

The next meeting will be at the Gabriola Golf Club on June 30 at 7:00 p.m.

The big Show and Shine will be on Sunday, August 14 and, as with last year’s show, proceeds raised will go to the Gabriola Lions Club.

Phillips said Fred Withey is currently the membership director.
