GERTIE Crew Report

On Monday, April 18, the GERTIE crew met like a three-part Venn diagram – some members of Island Futures (the original GERTIE gang) along with the directors of the Gabriola Community Bus Foundation, and Trevor Gear, our newly-hired coordinator. This transition meeting was a harbinger of good things to come. All members of the public are welcome to attend future meetings, held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 10:30 a.m. upstairs at the Commons.

The new “crew” meeting every second Monday will be the Gabriola Community Bus Foundation (GCBF) whose members are Anne Drozd, Steve Earle, Jim Ramsay, Judith Roux, Steve Struthers, Fay Weller, Susan Yates and Coordinator Trevor Gear. We’ll continue to call ourselves the GERTIE crew unless specificity is required.

The GERTIE schedule will change for the May Long Weekend, starting on Saturday, May 21, but please remember that the bus does not operate on statutory holiday Mondays (May 23). Schedule changes will include a new format and adding midday runs to accommodate the increase in visitors and local recreational riders in the spring and summer. Starting May 21, you will see GERTIE making three midday rounds from Tuesday to Saturday.

Like many businesses and services on our island, GERTIE will celebrate the longer, warmer days by welcoming visitors from near and far, and inviting local folks to try a friendly bus ride for some island sightseeing and recreating.

Later in the season we’ll be asking for your ideas and comments about GERTIE island adventures. Maybe you’re a boater, golfer, hiker, walker, beachcomber, or just someone who likes to ride to the Village in style and leave your vehicle at home for a pleasant change of routine. The more GERTIE can help you get around the island or to the ferry, the happier we will be!
