The first week in July GERTIE hit an all-time weekly passenger record of 379, making good use of all 4 buses in the fleet:  Gertie-Noir, Stealth-Gertie (the 2 Sprinters), Blanche, and Gus the Bus. GERTIE has now been in operation since June 2013, and it’s so encouraging to see a significant increase in ridership each summer. We know that visitors are getting the most from our lovely island when they can come by boat, bike and foot and enjoy everything from beachcombing to shopping via GERTIE.

This was GERTIE’s 4th year to help with transportation for the Concert on the Green on August 4. Despite the late ferries causing bamboozlement with the regular commuter schedule, GERTIE did manage to get everyone to the show on time. A special thanks to volunteer driver Tracy Begg for continuing the evening GERTIE schedule in order to get concert-goers home and back to the ferry.

Thank you also to Coordinator Trevor Gear for volunteering his time driving the bus to get so many people to and from the end of Berry Point Road on August 6, for our beloved Jeff Molloy’s memorial gathering. It was an honour for GERTIE to pay tribute to a family who gives so much to the island.

The Gabriola Community Bus Foundation (GERTIE’s directors) are planning the 2016 AGM for mid-September; time and place will be announced soon in the Sounder and on the website at www.gertie.ca
